Breastfeeding Calorie Formula

Milk production: ~1.5 oz per 10 min nursing
Calories per oz of breast milk: ~20 cal
Extra calories = Daily oz produced × 20

CDC recommends 330–500 extra cal/day for breastfeeding.
Don't restrict below total = TDEE + 500 cal.

Example Calculation

Example: 8 sessions, 15 min each, 2000 TDEE

Inputs

sessionsPerDay: 8minutesPerSession: 15baseTDEE: 2000

Result

+360 cal/day | Total: 2,360 cal

8 sessions × 1.5 oz/10min × 15 min × 20 cal/oz = 360 extra.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I diet while breastfeeding?
Mild calorie restriction (250–500 cal deficit) is generally safe after the first 6 weeks and doesn't significantly affect milk supply or quality for well-nourished mothers. Never go below 1,800 cal/day while breastfeeding.
Why am I not losing weight while breastfeeding?
Some women retain 5–10 lbs of fluid stores specifically for lactation. Weight often drops when weaning. Hunger from breastfeeding can also lead to overeating. Focus on nutrient quality and gentle movement.
