Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?
15% is the minimum for acceptable service. 18–20% is standard for good service. 25%+ is appropriate for exceptional service. For takeout, 10–15% is common. For delivery, 15–20% is standard — higher in bad weather or difficult locations.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Technically tip on pre-tax is correct, but most people tip on the total (including tax) — it makes little practical difference on most bills.
Is it rude to use a tip calculator?
Not at all. Using a calculator ensures you tip the right amount and split fairly. Most people appreciate accuracy over awkward mental math.
