How Dog Age is Calculated
The '7x rule' is a myth. Dogs age much faster in early life and more slowly later. Approximate human-year equivalents by size: Small dogs (live 15–18 yrs): 1yr=15, 2yr=24, then +4/yr Medium dogs (live 10–13 yrs): 1yr=15, 2yr=24, then +5/yr Large dogs (live 10–12 yrs): 1yr=15, 2yr=24, then +6/yr Giant dogs (live 7–10 yrs): 1yr=12, 2yr=22, then +7/yr Smaller breeds live longer and age more slowly after maturity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the 'multiply by 7' rule wrong?
Dogs reach sexual maturity around 1 year old — equivalent to a ~15-year-old human. They can't be only 7 in human years at that point. Dogs age rapidly in early life and much slower in middle age.
Do smaller dogs really live longer?
Yes, consistently. Chihuahuas and other small breeds regularly live 15–18+ years. Great Danes average 7–10 years. The exact biological reason isn't fully understood, but larger body size correlates with faster aging in dogs (opposite of most mammals).
When is a dog considered 'senior'?
Small dogs: around age 10–12. Medium dogs: around 8–10. Large dogs: around 7–8. Giant breeds: as early as 5–6. Senior dogs benefit from more frequent vet check-ups and adjusted nutrition.
