How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1

Select your unit system (US miles/MPG or metric km/L per 100km).

  2. 2

    Enter your trip distance.

  3. 3

Enter your vehicle's fuel efficiency (check EPA fueleconomy.gov for your car).

  4. 4

Enter the current gas price at your destination.

  5. 5

See total fuel cost and per-person cost for the group.

How Fuel Cost is Calculated

US/Imperial:
Gallons needed = Distance (miles) / MPG
Total cost = Gallons ร— Price per gallon

Metric:
Litres needed = Distance (km) ร— Fuel efficiency (L/100km) / 100
Total cost = Litres ร— Price per litre

Example Calculation

Example: 300-mile road trip, 30 MPG, $3.50/gallon

Inputs

units: imperialdistance: 300efficiency: 30gasPrice: 3.5passengers: 2

Result

$35 total fuel | $17.50 per person

300 miles รท 30 MPG = 10 gallons. 10 ร— $3.50 = $35. Split two ways = $17.50 each.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find my car's MPG?
Check fueleconomy.gov (US EPA official database) for your make, model, and year. You can also calculate actual MPG: fill up, drive until low, fill up again and divide miles driven by gallons used.
How does driving style affect fuel cost?
Highway driving typically achieves 20โ€“30% better fuel economy than city driving. Aggressive acceleration, air conditioning, and speed above 65 mph all reduce efficiency significantly.
